It's been a while since we've gone anywhere - how about visiting the beautiful village of Elton in Derbyshire?

I've decided I'm a total voyeur because I love looking at other people's houses.

This is a school.

Lovely to see a touch of summer in our dark winter.

The third from last photo shows a house with a big white pipe going up the front - an unfortunate place for it to go.

It would have been better grey wouldn't it.
Bet the walls are solid though.

It wasn't a wise decision to pick white. I agree, grey would have been better.

I'd take a paint brush to it, lol. What is that pipe for? Any idea? Can't figure out why it extends beyond the roof.

It's known as a stink pipe. It leads away from a toilet behind the small window in the middle of the house. The waste is flushed down the pipe to the underground sewer tunnel. It extends above the house so that any residual poopy smells and any harmful, noxious gases from the underground sewer pipe are released into the air above the house, far away from the residents.

Wow. Never heard of such a thing. Have no idea how ours work, but not like that. Thank you for the explanation! Perky and I have been wondering about those pipes.

I have a thing about stone houses. I admit it. I want one.

What a lovely church and school. All built from the local stone.
Hmm - I want to go there too now. :D

Hey Perky - see Binky's response above about what the pipes that extend above the houses are.
