Home Improvement project
Apr. 7th, 2013 12:49 pmMy neighbor/handyman, J, has started painting the inside of my house and doing new floors for me. It look me a long time (okay, it took me 3 years) to be comfortable with allowing someone in the house while I was at work. I figured better him than a contractor I didn't know, even though he's just putting in approximately 4 hours a day during the week so I can have my house to myself in the evenings and on weekends. I'm much more comfortable with that than being overrun with workman.
My new bathroom flooring is in the garage ready for next week.

It has a 25 year guarantee. The tiles overlap and they look like stone tiles when they're installed.
The new vanity top and faucets are installed, and the painting is complete except for the finishing work (baseboards and above the backsplash on the new top).
With any luck *crosses fingers* the bathroom will be completely done next week and he can get onto scraping acoustic ceiling off the hallway and living room.
I think I found the floor I want in the living room and kitchen. It's made by the same company as the bathroom flooring, but this stuff looks and feels like wood and has a 50 year guarantee. It's antique elm and really looks like wood. We're not talking the peel-and-stick vinyl tiles here. They're 6" by 36" planks that overlap and float on the floor, just like real wood, and are completely moisture resistant. Nice, because the hardwood floors under the flooring won't be damaged from it (not anymore than they are already from over 60 years of abuse). They also won't crack in an earthquake like ceramic tiles will.

I've started cleaning out pockets of "resistence" in the living room - you know, those corners that seem to collect everything? - in preparation for ultimately having to move everything out of it. J helped me rearrange things and move some boxes out to my newly-cleaned out garage today. I really can't wait to get the living room and kitchen painted and new floors in, but it's bound to be a while yet. Scraping that popcorn ceiling off is a big job. I think when the all the painting is done and we're ready for the rest of the floors, I'll have Home Depot do the installation and J can supervise, watch out for my animals, and basically be me for the day. I think it's way too big of a job for just one person.

Date: 2013-04-07 09:41 pm (UTC)You have given me an idea. When I get a new vanity/sink for the guest bathroom, I might see about getting vinyl flooring as well. The space is small, so it won't take much.

Date: 2013-04-07 11:30 pm (UTC)You can get top grade materials for a bath floor for $120 - $200. Well worth doing along with the vanity. The new materials they have out now are amazing.
